SANTIAGO DE GUAYAQUIL

Guayaquil was founded in 1547 as a shipyard and trading port serving the Spanish crown. It is a city that is pivotal in the politics and economy of the nation. It has begotten great revolutions and uprisings throughout history, being the first city in Ecuador to obtain a definitive independence from Spain in 1820.

Guayaquil boasts the largest river in Ecuador (the Guayas river), as well as the largest sea port where ships dock from all over the world. The downtown area of Guayaquil is one of the principal attractions for foreign and local tourists because it is the oldest area of the city. It is conveniently located near the Riverfront (Malecon) and the Las Peñas neighborhood which offers a beautiful view of the city from a multi-directional overlook after a winding climb of approximately 400 steps.
