GEOGRAPHY

Beach at Isabela Island
Ecuador has three main geographic regions and an archipelago region in the Pacific Ocean:
La Costa - The coastal area which is principally sea level land in the western part of the country bordering the Pacific Ocean.
La Sierra - The high-altitude belt that stretches from north to south in the center of the country dominated by the Andes mountain range.
La Amazonía - The Amazon rainforest area in the eastern part of the country, which incorporates slightly less than half of the country's land mass while accounting for less than 5% of its total population.
La Región Insular - The archipelago region of the Galapagos Islands, located 620 miles west of the mainland in the Pacific Ocean.
The capital of Ecuador is Quito and is located in the province of Pichincha in the Sierra region. The country’s largest city, Guayaquil, is located in the Province of Guayas in the coastal lowlands. The Province of Cotopaxi, located just south of Quito, features one of the world's highest active volcanoes. The peak of Mount Chimborazo, at 6,310 meters above sea level, is considered to be the most distant points from the center of the earth, given the ovoid shape of the planet.
